Cockroaches
Cockroaches are among the oldest and most adaptable insects on Earth, having existed for hundreds of millions of years. Today, more than 4,500 species are known worldwide, although only a small number are commonly associated with homes and buildings. Their remarkable ability to adapt to a wide range of environments has enabled them to thrive alongside humans in homes, restaurants, offices and commercial establishments across the world.
Although often associated with poor hygiene, cockroaches can also be found in clean, well-maintained buildings where favourable conditions exist.

Biology
Body Structure
Cockroaches have a flattened, oval-shaped body that allows them to move through remarkably narrow spaces. Their long antennae are highly sensitive and help detect food, moisture and danger. Six strong, spiny legs enable rapid movement, while most adult species possess wings, although not all are frequent flyers.
Life Cycle
Cockroaches undergo incomplete metamorphosis, developing through three stages: egg, nymph and adult. Young nymphs resemble miniature adults and gradually mature through a series of moults before reaching adulthood.
Reproduction: Female cockroaches produce egg cases known as oothecae, each containing multiple eggs. Under favourable conditions, populations can increase rapidly.
Growth & Lifespan: Development from egg to adult varies between species and environmental conditions. Most common household species complete their life cycle within several months.
Behaviour: Cockroaches are primarily nocturnal and spend the day hidden in cracks, crevices and other sheltered locations before emerging at night to search for food and water.
Habitat: Cockroaches prefer warm, humid and sheltered environments where they can remain hidden during the day. Common harbourages include cracks, crevices, wall voids, drains, cupboards and spaces beneath appliances.
Diet: Cockroaches are omnivorous scavengers capable of feeding on a wide variety of organic materials, including food scraps, grease, paper, cardboard, glue and decaying organic matter.
Why Are They Found in Homes?
Cockroaches are drawn indoors by the same narrow cracks and sheltered spaces their flattened bodies are built to exploit. Kitchens, bathrooms, storage areas and utility spaces offer exactly this — warmth, moisture and countless hiding places — making them ideal environments for cockroaches to establish and reproduce.
In nature, cockroaches are preyed upon by birds, frogs, lizards, spiders, centipedes and certain parasitic wasps. Indoors, however, these natural predators are generally absent, allowing populations to grow if suitable conditions persist.
Why They Are a Concern
Cockroaches can contaminate food preparation areas and stored food as they move between drains, waste areas and living spaces. Their droppings, shed skins and body fragments may contribute to indoor allergens, while large infestations often produce an unpleasant odour.
In homes, they can affect hygiene and indoor environmental quality. In commercial settings, particularly those involved in food handling and hospitality, cockroach activity may affect hygiene standards, customer confidence and regulatory compliance.
Signs of Activity
Cockroach Sightings: Cockroaches are primarily nocturnal. Regular daytime sightings may indicate a well-established infestation, as overcrowding can force them out of their harbourages.
Droppings: Small, dark droppings resembling black pepper or coffee grounds are often found near harbourages and food sources.
Egg Cases (Oothecae): Brown capsule-shaped egg cases may be found in hidden cracks, cupboards and behind appliances.
Shed Skins: As nymphs grow, they shed their outer skin several times before reaching adulthood.
Smear Marks: Brown smear marks may appear along walls and other surfaces in damp areas with frequent cockroach activity.
Musty Odour: Large infestations may produce a persistent oily or musty smell.
Seasonal Activity
Cockroaches remain active throughout the year but become noticeably more active during warm and humid weather. Increased temperatures accelerate their growth and reproduction, while higher humidity improves their chances of survival.
In Arunachal Pradesh, it isn’t just warmth and humidity that matter — heavy monsoon rainfall itself is often the bigger trigger. Many cockroaches live in drains, sewers and other damp outdoor harbourages, and when these flood during periods of heavy rain, they’re displaced and move indoors in search of drier shelter. This means cockroach sightings often spike during and just after heavy rainfall, rather than building gradually through the season.
