Ants are highly organised social insects that live in colonies ranging from a few dozen individuals to several million. They are among the most successful insects on Earth and can be found in almost every terrestrial habitat.

While most species play an important ecological role by improving soil health, dispersing seeds and helping decompose organic matter, some become nuisance or structural pests when they invade homes and commercial buildings in search of food, water and shelter.

Biology

Body Structure

Ants possess three distinct body segments—the head, thorax and abdomen—connected by a narrow waist known as the petiole. Their elbowed antennae play an important role in communication, while powerful mandibles are used for carrying food, digging nests and defending the colony.

Colony Structure

Queen: Lays eggs.

Workers: Gather food, care for the brood and maintain the nest.

Males: Their primary role is reproduction.

Brood: Eggs, larvae and pupae that develop into adult ants.

Life Cycle

Unlike termites, ants undergo complete metamorphosis, developing through four distinct stages before becoming adults.

Reproduction: New colonies are established after winged queens and males take part in nuptial flights.

Growth & Lifespan: Worker ants may live for several months or years, while queens of some species can survive for many years.

Behaviour: Ants communicate using pheromones, allowing workers to establish organised foraging trails.

Habitat: Ants nest in soil, wall voids, timber, gardens, pavements and beneath stones.

Diet: Most pest ants are omnivorous and feed on sugary foods, proteins, grease and dead insects.

Why Are They Found in Homes?

Homes provide ants with reliable food sources, moisture and sheltered nesting locations. Even small crumbs, sugary spills and pet food can attract foraging workers, which then leave chemical trails for other colony members to follow.

Natural predators include spiders, birds, lizards, frogs and other insects. Indoors, these predators are largely absent, allowing colonies to forage with minimal disturbance.

Why They Are a Concern

Most household ants are nuisance pests rather than destructive pests. They contaminate food, invade kitchens and pantries, and can become persistent once established. Some species, such as carpenter ants, may excavate damp or decaying wood to create nesting galleries, while others can interfere with electrical equipment or protect plant pests such as aphids in gardens.

Signs of Activity

Foraging Trails: Lines of ants moving between food sources and the nest are among the most obvious signs of activity.

Winged Ants: Swarming winged ants may indicate a mature colony preparing to establish new nests.

Nest Openings: Small mounds of soil or tiny openings may mark underground nests.

Food Contamination: Ants frequently gather around uncovered food, sugary substances and pet food.

Wood Shavings: Carpenter ants may leave coarse wood fragments near nesting sites.

Frequent Indoor Activity: Repeated sightings in kitchens or bathrooms often indicate an established nearby colony.

Seasonal Activity

Ant activity generally increases during warm weather when colonies expand and food is abundant. Many species also become more active following rainfall, while winged reproductives often emerge during suitable weather conditions to establish new colonies.

In Arunachal Pradesh’s hilly terrain, it’s less about standing water than direct soil saturation — heavy, sustained monsoon rainfall can waterlog the shallow ground nests many ant species rely on, forcing colonies to relocate or move indoors in search of drier ground. This is especially true for nests in areas with poorer natural drainage or heavier clay soils.
